Watercolour Workshop

DAY 1: Tuesday 10 March, 2020 Hanoi, Vietnam
A private transfer will meet your flight and transfer you to our workshop hotel in Hanoi. Hanoi is without doubt one of Asia’s most beautiful cities, with its French style architecture, narrow alleyways packed with bicycles and merchants, beautiful lakes, a magnificent Opera House and delightful low-rise buildings produce a unique ambience. This evening the group will meet for welcome drinks and David will outline his plans for the workshop. There will be an included dinner tonight. (Pre tour accommodation for passengers wanting to arrive earlier can be arranged through Travelrite along with a private transfer).

DAY 2: Wednesday 11 March, 2020 Hanoi, Vietnam
This morning we will have a sightseeing tour of Hanoi with a local guide. We will see the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex followed by a ride on a cyclo through the Old Quarter. The city has had an amazing history and witnessed numerous incursions from China, seen a host of Vietnamese emperors come and go, and at one time even lost its status as the nation’s capital. With the coming of the French at the end of the 19th century, the city gained a new lease of life. This European influence can still be seen in the elegant colonial buildings that line the broad tree-lined boulevards of much of the city. After lunch there will be time for painting in one of the nearby back streets.

DAY 3: Thursday 12 March, 2020 Hanoi, Vietnam
A full day of painting in Hanoi with David. This evening we will go and see a performance of the famous Water Puppets. The art of water puppetry is unique to the areas surrounding the Red River (Song Hong) and not to be missed when you are in Hanoi. It used to be practiced by rice farmers in flooded paddy fields for centuries, and is handed down from generation to generation. It involves wooden puppets manipulated by bamboo wooden sticks hidden beneath the water, which depict stories of Vietnamese folk tales and daily life.

DAY 4: Friday 13 March, 2020 Halong Bay, Vietnam
Today we will depart Hanoi and travel to Halong Bay, en route we will pass fields of busy workers farming their rice fields using traditional methods of cultivation. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

Today we will spend the day aboard a boat cruising around magnificent Halong Bay and among thousands of islands that jut out of the sea with its spectacular natural environment. You will also have the opportunity to see two of the many grottoes. A delicious lunch will be served as you take in this amazing scenery. In the afternoon, David will paint a demonstration on the boat and there will be time for individual sketching. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

DAY 6: Sunday 15 March, 2020 Hoi An, Vietnam
This morning we will board our flight to Danang. On arrival we travel beside China Beach, to reach the ancient town of Hoi An. The large community of foreign merchants living in Hoi An between the 16th and 18th centuries resulted in a unique display of architecture, combining Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese cultures. Our hotel is a short stroll from the colourful and bustling Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hoi An has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tile-roofed houses and narrow streets, the original structure of some of these streets still remain intact. All the houses were made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters. Tonight we will have an included dinner.

This morning we have a walking tour of Hoi An with a local guide through the narrow winding streets of the Ancient Quarter.
