Sunday 7 November 2021 – Friday 19 November 2021

Itinerary

DAY 1: Sunday 7 November, 2021 Bicheno, Tasmania
Workshop members will be met at Launceston airport at midday and transferred to the beautiful town of Bicheno. Bicheno is a picturesque town situated on the east coast of Tasmania. The town began life as a sealing and whaling town and then transitioned to a coal mining port (shipping coal mined inland at Fingal), but today cray fishing is the largest industry. Tonight the group will meet for welcome drinks and an included dinner.

DAY 2: Monday 8 November, 2021 Bicheno, Tasmania
This morning Tony will commence his first painting workshop with a demonstration and then assist workshop members individually with their work in the beautiful town of Bicheno. Regular critique sessions will be held throughout the tour. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

DAY 3: Tuesday 9 November, 2021 Hobart, Tasmania
We will travel by coach to Freycinet National Park. Freycinet National Park is a place of rare beauty with its white beaches and bright blue waters overlooked by the pink granite mountains of The Hazards. There is a wide variety of vegetation including wetland, coastal dunes, dry eucalypt forest and orchids that bloom all year round. Tony will perform a demonstration and then it will be your turn to paint while Tony assists tour members with their painting. This afternoon we will continue our journey to Hobart.

DAY 4: Wednesday 10 November, 2021 Hobart, Tasmania
Today we will enjoy a full day of painting in beautiful Hobart. The group will paint the 19th century waterfront warehouses for which the city is famous. The warehouses were once busy with whalers, soldiers, petty bureaucrats and opportunist businessmen, now they house cafes, restaurants and studios and bustle with shoppers and visitors.

DAY 5: Thursday 11 November, 2021 Hobart, Tasmania
This morning we will travel to Richmond for a day of painting. Richmond is a beautiful old town with Georgian cottages of mellow sandstone standing in pretty cottage gardens. Ducks on the Coal River swim to and fro under Australia’s oldest bridge, built by convict labour between 1823/25. In late 2005, the Bridge was recognised as one of Australia’s outstanding historic places and added to the National Heritage List. Tony will demonstrate how to capture the beauty of this picturesque area and assist workshop members with their painting. In the afternoon we will visit the MONA gallery.

DAY 6: Friday 12 November, 2021 Hobart, Tasmania
Today we will travel to Port Arthur for a full day of sightseeing and sketching. Between 1830 and 1877 about 12,500 transported convicts were imprisoned at Port Arthur, on the shores of a beautiful bay and set against the tranquil hills and forest of the Tasman Peninsula. Many of the sandstone prison buildings remain and have been preserved. On arrival, we will have a tour of the prison giving you an impression of what life might have been like in the 1800s for the convicts, soldiers and civilians. After lunch, there will be time for sketching. We will return to Hobart in the afternoon.

DAY 7: Saturday 13 November, 2021 Hobart, Tasmania
This morning we travel south to the coastal towns of Kettering, Cygnet and Huonville, located in the Huon Valley for a full day of painting and sightseeing.

DAY 8: Sunday 14 November, 2021 Strahan, Tasmania
This morning we will leave Hobart and travel to Strahan. We will stop along the way at Derwent Bridge to visit the Wall in the Wilderness. It is one of Australia’s most ambitious art projects, Greg Duncan has carved the history of the highlands in 100 metres of timber. We continue onto Strahan, a pretty little port on Macquarie’s Harbour and the only town on Tasmania’s forbidding West Coast. Originally a Huon pine timber milling town its growth was boosted by the copper boom at the Mt Lyell mine. When the Strahan Zeehan railway opened in 1892 it became a busy port. Today it handles freight to and from Queenstown and is used by crayfish, abalone and shark fishermen. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

DAY 9: Monday 15 November, 2021 Strahan, Tasmania
This morning Tony will find a great painting location in Strahan and complete a demonstration. Following this Tony will assist individual workshop members with their painting. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

DAY 10: Tuesday 16 November, 2021 Strahan, Tasmania
This morning we will cruise on the world-famous Gordon River. The ancient, mirror like waters of the Gordon River meander down from their source in the Central Highlands, through a breathtaking World Heritage river cape of temperate rainforest and mountain crag, to the mouth of Macquarie Harbour. The Macquarie Harbour is more than 110 square miles of natural, protected water surrounding the crumbling history of Sarah Island and gives way to the open ocean through the narrow and turbulent Hell’s Gates. You will see Hell’s Gate where the harbour opens to the Southern Ocean, Tasmania’s world-renowned salmon farms, and you will visit notorious Sarah Island, the feared penal colony. This will be a wonderful photo and sketching opportunity for you. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

DAY 11: Wednesday 17 November, 2021 Launceston, Tasmania
Today we travel to Launceston. Launceston is at the junction of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they become the Tamar River. Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania after Hobart and a vibrant hub for food and wine, culture and nature. There will be an afternoon painting session in Launceston. Tonight there will be an included dinner.

DAY 12: Thursday 18 November, 2021 Launceston, Tasmania
